Summer Sun Safety Tips for Seniors

Importance of Summer Sun Safety Routines

August is Summer Sun Safety Month, the perfect time for seniors to revisit their sun safety routines. Why? This is to prevent harmful conditions such as skin damage or even skin cancer from developing.

  • Skin Cancer: What Is it and What Causes It?

Skin cancer is defined as the abnormal growth of skin cells and typically affects seniors age 65 and older. There are three main types of skin cancers:

    • Basal cell carcinoma
    • Squamous cell carcinoma
    • Melanoma
    • These three are often found on sun-exposed parts of the body, and their occurrence is typically tied to lifetime sun exposure. Artificial sources of UV exposure, such as tanning beds, are also linked to skin cancer risk.

  • Why Are Seniors at Higher Risk?

Aging skin undergoes several changes that weaken the body’s defenses against skin disease and damage. The number one risk factor for seniors is the cumulative sun exposure they’ve had throughout their lifetimes.

A few other risks include skin type, heredity, immune system health, and overall health.
